On the One Hand Peggy, and on the Other Wonkette
My title refers lamely to my favorite piece of press criticism, A .J. Liebling's "Death on the One Hand," about the long last rattle of Joseph Stalin, an instructive historical curiosity in the age of online instanews. Jim Newell's deconstruction of WSJ Reaganite-apostate Peggy Noonan's inauguration column is even more unkind--perhaps even unfair. I really don't see why he chose those three sentences to bf and annotate, for instance. Nevertheless, what a deft little Hatchett Job.

Well, that's Jim for ya.
Also TruckNutz!
The smart! It burns!
Princess Peggington Noonington deserves all the criticism she can get. And more. Also.
I believe you mean "hatchet job", not "Hatchett Job". Unless you are trying (and failing) to affect the same 17th-century style employed by Madame Peggiworth Noonington.
Give me a break, I got close enough for a blog--indeed, a link. Fact is, I'm rather proud I got the link to work. It has not always been thus.
Who's Peggy Noonan? Did she sing with Herman's Hermits?
Peggy is a true angel and doesn't deserve the attention of the unwashed and vulgar ruffians of the Wonkette weblog. Certainly, she rarely predicts events or outcomes correctly. Arguably, she is also slightly delusional with regard to the policies of the GOP, particularly during the Reagan era. Other than that, however, she's a lovely woman with a keen intellect and a rapier wit!
Begone, Wonkette trash! I have sent Dear Peggy a set of Trucknuts for her car in celebration of her triumph over the Wonkette commenters.
"I really don't see why he chose those three sentences to bf and annotate." '
Those Wonkette people are cruel. They tend to brutally mock people they see as being so white, that they feel the need to write an article about how amazed they were that black people could, you know, buy things, fly on airplanes & generally be regular members of society.
Leave Judge Hatchett out of this.
I thought Newell was quite kind, in light of the fact that Peggy Noonan seems positively stunned every time she sees evidence that black people are just like non-black people and is constantly patting herself on the back for being "progressive" enough to point out same.
Hmm . . . something about her name reminds me of my lost boyhood. Got it: Peggington Noonington Seagull.
