Necessary Laughter (Or: A Really Good Acceptance Speech)
The Washington Post's Ron Charles left his audience helpless with laughter Thursday night at the National Book Critics Circle Awards in New York. He accepted the Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing with a speech that mixed gallows humor, self-deprecation and some thoughtful, even inspiring, observations about criticism and the role of the critic.
Strange to say about a speech given by a writer, but quoting it doesn't nearly do it justice. It's the delivery by Charles -- whose stand-alone print section, Book World, the Post killed last month -- that makes it hilarious. (Here are links to videos of the presentation of awards for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, criticism, biography and autobiography.)
