Summit Projects Have Been Chosen

Today we have notified representatives of the five projects chosen to present at the National Summit on Arts Journalism. If you haven't heard from us by the time you're reading this, then your project hasn't been chosen. We apologize for the delay. We had expected 30-40 submissions but then got 108, and it took much longer to thoroughly consider all the submissions. Details of the judging process are below.

We had intended to announce the names of the five projects we have chosen here on the website. Instead, we have decided, based on the protracted process of selection, that we will wait to announce those selected until the Summit itself. We'd rather change the previously-announced plan than announce the names without the context for why they were chosen. Here's why:  READ MORE>

It's easy to do.

August 28, 2009

Sorry to say, but choosing among all of the submitted projects has been tougher than we anticipated. We're not done yet. We'll make an announcement next week.

August 18, 2009

The submission period for entering projects for the National Summit on Arts Journalism has closed. The response has been amazing, and we have received about three times as many entries as we originally expected. The five projects chosen to present at the Summit will be announced in this space Friday August 28th. To see projects that are under consideration for the Summit, please click the "project" link in the navigation bad at the top of this page.

A Summit on Arts Journalism

Arts journalism is undergoing radical changes as the culture is being transformed. So what's next?

Every week we're hearing about new projects aimed at reinventing arts coverage. Journalists, arts organizations and media entrepreneurs are trying to create interesting new models of arts journalism. Experimentation is the order of the day. We want to gather up some of the best of these projects, see what looks promising, and bring them to a wider audience.

On Friday, October 2 at the USC Annenberg School for Communication we're holding a Summit to showcase the best of these new projects. The event will be held in front of a live audience of cultural leaders, journalists, media entrepreneurs and funders, and streamed on the web (more information about the day's schedule will be posted in late August).

A Call for Projects

Five of the projects for the Summit will be chosen from those submitted on this website before midnight, Monday, August 17. A representative from each of the five projects will be brought to Los Angeles to make a 7-10-minute presentation at the Summit. Each of the five projects will get $2,000 plus travel expenses and coaching on their presentation.

We're organizing several live gatherings around the country to watch and discuss the presentations. The event will be live-blogged and include questions and comments from the online audience.

Prizes

In the two weeks following the event, members of the National Arts Journalism Program and alumni of the National Endowment for the Arts' Arts Journalism Institutes will vote on their favorite projects. Prizes of $7,500 for first, $5,000 for second and $2,500 for third will be awarded.
